We are a team of experts on a mission to enable companies deliver planet-friendly products without performance tradeoffs.
Planet Smart was born from a mission to tackle plastic pollution, a commitment that began when co-founders Gerald and Maurice launched Rethink Plastic during the 2020 lockdowns. Through educational initiatives and partnerships with organizations like the World Wildlife Fund and Plastic Pollution Coalition, they grew awareness around plastic waste. But it was during river cleanups that a hidden issue emerged: hygiene products like diapers and menstrual pads were left untouched, revealing a massive, overlooked source of plastic pollution.
Determined to find a solution, Planet Smart set out to create sustainable materials that could deliver the same convenience as disposable products without the environmental impact. Through rigorous R&D, they developed PlanetSorb—a fully compostable, bio-based superabsorbent polymer that matches the performance of traditional materials and empowers brands to make truly eco-friendly hygiene products.
At Planet Smart, sustainability drives everything we do. With consumers demanding eco-friendly options that remain convenient and effective, we’re rethinking disposables to reduce plastic waste without compromising performance. PlanetSorb, our fully compostable, bio-based polymer, offers a scalable, biodegradable solution to replace traditional fossil-based superabsorbents in hygiene products. Unlike recycling, which relies on costly infrastructure and faces disposal challenges, our approach ensures that even if a product is improperly discarded, it leaves no harmful microplastics behind. Together, we’re helping brands make a positive impact and building a smarter, cleaner future.
Every minute, over 500,000 nappies are discarded, contributing heavily to global plastic pollution. These products degrade into microplastics that contaminate soil, waterways, and air, harming ecosystems and wildlife. Microplastics also reduce CO₂ absorption in oceans and soil, weakening our natural carbon sinks.
Each nappy has a 120g CO₂ footprint, primarily from fossil-based materials, with end-of-life emissions equivalent to burning 2.3 million barrels of oil yearly. Governments are starting to recognize and address this urgent crisis in plastic waste.
Although most diaper parts can be made biobased and/or biodegradable, the last missing link towards an eco-friendly diaper is a 100% biodegradable superabsorbent polymer.
Our solution combines breakthrough science with the power to scale sustainably. Through rigorous R&D, Planet Smart has developed a bio-based, compostable superabsorbent polymer that delivers performance without compromise.
Designed for large-scale production, PlanetSorb is cost-effective and ready to meet the needs of brands worldwide. By partnering with companies committed to reducing microplastic pollution, we’re working to make a lasting impact on the environment, helping meet the demand for cleaner, more sustainable materials.
By engaging with governments and civil society, we’re working to bring greater awareness to the environmental costs of microplastics and fossil-based materials. These pollutants contribute to rising greenhouse gas emissions and contaminate ecosystems globally—from soil and oceans to even human health. Together, we’re pushing for policies and solutions that drive lasting change for a cleaner, healthier planet.
